In the age of technology, the ways we communicate are changing. We are starting to communicate through AI-powered systems. Can a software share a person’s loneliness?
The 2013 film ‘Her’ is an interesting one in this context. Written and directed by Spike Jonze, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, and Amy Adams. Although Scarlett Johansson is never physically seen throughout the film, her voice is heard in an AI-driven application, similar to the Siri app on iOS devices.
In the film, Theodore, a writer who begins living alone after divorcing his wife, makes a living by writing handwritten letters. One day, he buys a software that he thinks might be useful, after seeing it in an advertisement. The software offers an AI application named Samantha, who starts asking Theodore intriguing questions that challenge his mind and expand his horizons. Through the software, Theodore is able to escape his loneliness and begins developing strange feelings for Samantha.
