Ex Machina: A Fascinating Film on Artificial Intelligence

Written and directed by British filmmaker Alex Garland, Ex Machina stars Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac. The film revolves around three main characters and takes place in a secluded house/research center where Nathan, the owner of the Blue Book search engine, is working on artificial intelligence. Caleb, an employee at Nathan’s company, wins a lottery and is invited to Nathan’s home for a visit. There, Nathan introduces Caleb to Ava, the AI he has been working on. Nathan intends to use Caleb to administer the Turing test on Ava to prove that she is a successful form of artificial intelligence. However, Ava has her own desires — primarily to escape the confines of the research facility. As the film progresses, Nathan, with his scheming plans and macho persona, and Caleb, with his sensitive and curious nature, refuse to consider the possibility that Ava might have independent thoughts or plans of her own. Instead of trying to understand her, they view her merely as a controllable, beautiful object. However, things do not go as they expect. The film challenges the audience’s perception of artificial intelligence, control, and the ethics of creation, leading to a gripping, unpredictable ending.
